Vanilla is the fruit of an orchid plant (V. planifolia) that has monopodial climbing stems. It is native to the humid forests of the Americas. The vanilla seeds are fermented after being processed to extract the pleasant aroma and vanilla is commonly used in powder form. In Iran, it is used extensively in pastry and making ice cream. The Totonac were the first people to produce vanilla.
